"hey, that guy turer of the generator and, after he addoesn't know anything". mitted there was a problem, he refused to do anything. why? because this how many times have you seen build- builder places a lot of his product and ers do shoddy work or use poorly sized he didn't want to piss him off. or junk equipment? how many times have you seen new equipment not i know every one of you guys have a work or breakdown right away? how plethora of examples just like the ones many times have you gotten bad tech- i've given. it always comes back to the nical support over the phone? i can same thing. "don't listen to that poolhear the answers from here. of course guy, he doesn't know anything." this leaves us holding the bag to try and figure out how to make this gar- here's one thing i do know, the swimbage work to the customer's satisifac- ming pool service tech is the only guy tion. which, by the way, we happily that is truly looking out for the customer. do. example #1 i went out to brush the plaster on a very small, brand new pool. about 8, 000 gallons. it had been plastered the day before. while i was brushing the builder showed up to show the customer how to turn on the sheer descent. the sheer descent came on, a bunch of dirt came out and stained the plaster. the next day the builder drained it and acid washed it. he acid washed 2 day old plaster! he filled it then he poured in 2 gallons of acid and split! bottom line: the plaster turned to crap and the customer was mad. example #2 i have a customer that remodeled his entire yard. he tore out and replaced everything. new suction and return lines, new tile, coping, pebbles, landscaping, flat work, equipment, everything. the builder puts in an undersized bypass to the spa and an undersized saltwater chlorine generator that wasn't even self cleaning. then he jams the equipment on a spot no bigger than a postage stamp. the spa doesn't get enough flow, the chloinator can't meet the demand and the cell must be cleaned once or twice a week ; and lord help me if i ever have to replace a shaft seal. many builders cut corners, stick their hand out for the check and disappear. many manufactureres only focus on builders because they place lots of their products. in the end, it is only the poolman that is looking out for the needs of the poor guy that is actually spending the money that makes this industry prosper, the end user. yeah, there are a variety of industry "institutes" and "councils" that say they work to elevate the industry but where are they? why is the retail customer continually getting burned? this is not an indictment of all builders and all manufacturers. i acknowledge there are many good people out there doing excellent work. especially the ones that support us. but we all know there are plenty of stinkers out there. poolmen everywhere can hold their heads high knowing they are on the front lines, elevating this industry by taking care of the people that ultimately finance this industry, our customers. steve homer chapter 7.
